FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
IS TOPAMAX EFFECTIVE FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
Several clinical studies have shown that topamax can help people lose weight. The average weight loss with topamax is 3% of your starting body weight after 3 months and 5-7% after 6 months. But many patients report losing even more weight than this. To put that in context, a 5-7 percent weight loss equals 10-14 pounds for a 200-pound person. This medication, however, does not work for everyone. If you haven't lost much weight after three months, your doctor may advise you to stop taking the medication and adopt another weight loss strategy.
WHAT SHOULD I DISCUSS WITH MY DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING PHENTERMINE AND TOPIRAMATE?
If you have used an MAO inhibitor within the last 14 days, do not take this medication. A dangerous drug interaction is possible. Isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline and tranylcypromine are all MAO inhibitors.
This medication should not be used if you are allergic to phentermine or topiramate, have glaucoma, an overactive thyroid, or are pregnant or wanting to become pregnant.
CAN I TAKE THE GENERIC VERSION OF PHENTERMINE?
The cost of phentermine and its brand counterparts can vary substantially depending on pharmacy and location. But the generic medication is typically much cheaper than a brand medication, regardless of pharmacy location. When there is a generic option for a common prescription medication, you do not have to pay higher for the brand name price. Be sure to discuss with your doctor whether generic phentermine is suitable for your weight loss plan.
WHY IS PHENTERMINE A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE?
Phentermine is a scheduled drug because there is a risk of abuse. It functions similarly to amphetamines, which are drugs that people can use recreationally and illicitly. Because of the potential for misuse, strict monitoring and additional safety measures are in place to prevent people from obtaining phentermine without a prescription and proper doctor supervision.
IS ADIPEX THE SAME AS PHENTERMINE?
Phentermine is a generic name, while Adipex is a brand name. Adipex has a set dosage of its active ingredient phentermine HCl. Both the generic and the brand versions are safe and effective, but generics tend to cost less than brand-name drugs.
WHICH SIDE EFFECTS CAN I EXPECT WITH PHENTERMINE?
Dry mouth, sleep problems, dizziness, heart palpitations, skin flushing, fatigue, constipation, irritability, nausea, and vomiting are the most commonly reported side effects of phentermine and combined phentermine and topiramate.
While severe side effects are relatively rare, they include elevated blood pressure, suicidal ideation, metabolic acidosis, increased creatinine levels, fetal harm, vision problems, cognitive impairment, and hypokalemia.
IS PHENTERMINE FOR WEIGHT LOSS FDA APPROVED?
Phentermine is approved by the US FDA as an anti-obesity drug only for short term, up to 12 weeks. On the other hand, the FDA has also approved the brand-named combination medication, Phentermine/Topiramate-CR (Qsymia), in 2012. And Qsymia is approved for long-term use up to a year or more.
