FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS BRACHIOPLASTY?
The arm lift is a surgery performed under a general anesthetic that targets the underarm region, designed to reshape the excess skin caused by weight loss or natural aging, generally from the elbow to the armpit. It is usually performed in conjunction with liposuction, aiming to improve the all-embracing contours of the arms. This procedure is recommended for men and women and is often performed on patients who have experienced sudden weight fluctuations.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN ARM LIFT SURGERY?
Depending on your surgery goal, the entire procedure can take up to 3 hours. Right before surgery, your doctor will meet you to review the procedure plan and possibly mark your arms to easily identify anatomical landmarks and incision sites during the operation. You’ll then receive anesthesia and surgery will be carried out through the incision markings from the underarm to the elbow on the underside of your arms, to excise the excess tissue. Finally, the remaining skin is redraped around the arms and sutured closed. Often the surgery can also include a liposuction procedure to sculpt the arms and bring more definition to the result.
HOW IS THE RECOVERY AFTER AN ARM LIFT?
Following the surgery, it is common to experience swelling and tenderness in your arms and you’ll be prescribed pain medication to help with any discomfort. In the aftercare, your arms will likely be covered with bandages and drains may be placed in the incisions to remove fluid buildup. Compression sleeves are recommended to minimize swelling throughout the recovery period. It is important to note that you won’t be able to lift your arms above shoulder level for the 3 weeks following surgery. And you should also avoid engaging in physical activities that require you to raise your arms above your head until after 8 weeks post-op.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BRACHIOPLASTY?
The best candidates for an arm lift are those who have excess skin that hangs from their upper arms, with a minimal amount of fat. Of course, the person needs to be healthy. There should not be any medical conditions present that can impede the healing process. On that note, women who had breast cancer surgery like radical mastectomy may not be good candidates, since the procedure can cause permanent swelling of the arms. Your doctor will assess your unique body configuration and provide you with the most appropriate options depending on your case.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM AN ARM LIFT?
Your surgeon will advise you on the assets and liabilities that can be expected from your very own Brachioplasty surgery. But overall there are three ruling pros and cons to weigh when considering an upper arm lift.
Pros
● You will look much better in form-fitting clothes.
● You will have increased confidence and a better self-image.
● You will be able to wear short-sleeve or sleeveless clothing without feeling self-conscious.
Cons
● You will have visible scars along the insides of your arms, extending from the armpit to the elbow.
● If your sagging underarm skin is not excessive, an upper arm lift may not be worth the resulting scars.
● Your surgeon will not be able to predict exactly how your scars will look.
IS ARM LIFT SURGERY PAINFUL?
Since you will be under the influence of an anesthetic, you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Immediately following the arm lift, you can experience some discomfort, but any pain should be tolerable with the provision of painkillers. Although the majority of patients don't do them after a few days.

HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY FOR A BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Every patient is unique, so time can vary. There is no exact timeline for recovery, however, most surgeons agree that a full recovery can take on average six to eight weeks. Some factors will influence your breast augmentation recovery, including implant placement and your general health prior to surgery. But most women can return to a normal routine within the first seven to ten days following surgery, as long as their job does not require lifting or strenuous physical activity. Light exercise can be resumed at two weeks post operation.
HOW MUCH DOES AN ARM LIFT COST?
The average cost of an arm lift is [TBD], but the final price can vary depending on the complexity of your case. We provide complimentary consultations to determine the best option and pricing for you at our New York locations.

The specifics of the surgical plan will be designated by Dr Sharon Giese, MD. After a consultation, every patient is provided with a tailored quote for all the costs associated with the procedure.
WHERE CAN I GET AN ARM LIFT NEAR ME?
If you are hiding in long sleeves, keep in mind that an Arm Lift is the most effective and permanent way to recontour arms and give you a more toned and slim look. It is preferable to have this procedure done by a surgeon who is specially trained to perform Brachioplasty and has a lot of experience in carrying out this type of surgery.
