FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW IS PRFM COLLECTED AND USED IN HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS?
PRFM is a skin rejuvenation technique that uses your own blood platelets to stimulate hair growth and overturn hair thinning. In the process, about 20mls of your blood will be taken and spun in a special blood centrifuge for up to 10 minutes. The centrifuge will then separate out the red blood cells, the white blood cells, and growth factors. The plasma and growth factors will be collected and then concentrated to compose growth factors, hence the acronym “platelet fibrin matrix”. Finally, under topical anesthesia, PRFM will be injected back into your scalp in order to stimulate the follicles, so that your hair can regrow and thicken as expected.
WILL PRFM WORK IF YOU’RE COMPLETELY BALD?
PRFM is a beneficial treatment for patients with mild to moderate hair loss. Since it promotes natural hair growth, it can only work if you have hair follicles that are still active. If you are completely or almost completely bald, your hair follicles are probably inactive or no longer exist, so PRFM won’t work for you.
IS PRFM FOR HAIR LOSS SAFE?
Very much so. Since it works with platelets concentrated from your own blood, PRFM offers no risk of disease transmission. Clinically, PRFM has been used for over two decades in several medical fields. But, despite the prevalent opinion of growth factors’s safety and benefits within hair loss treatments, it is still in the early stages of scientific research for subsequent FDA approval.
WHERE CAN PRFM BE USED?
When injected into the skin, PRFM can help restore volume to the face, stimulate new collagen and boost a more youthful look. When injected into the scalp, PRFM can increase hair follicle activity, stimulating hair growth and hair thickening. The most common areas PRFM is used are the face, neck, décolletage or scalp, but there are more areas that can be treated successfully, such as:
- Fine lines in eye area;
- Acne scars;
- Cheeks;
- Mid-face;
- Neck – thinning skin;
- Jawline;
- Hands;
- Upper arms;
- Post-baby tummy in the abdomen.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO PRFM IN HAIR LOSS TREATMENTS?
Even though it is a very safe procedure with minimal aftercare, there is always a chance of mild swelling in the forehead, due the local anesthesia. You can also experience some scalp tenderness or even headache, around the injections site. But all these symptoms should resolve spontaneously within the first two days post treatment.
