HOW DOES LASER VEIN REMOVAL WORK?
ND YAG laser technology allows us to successfully remove a wide range of unsightly vascular lesions, from fine facial veins, spider veins and vascular birthmarks to larger leg veins. Laser vein removal treatments are fast, non-invasive, safe and effective. The ND YAG laser heats and penetrates the superficial blood vessel. With that, the laser coagulates the blood inside the vessel, causing it to collapse and seal. Over the next few weeks, the vessel disappears and all the blood is removed by the body's scavenging cells. Typically 3 - 5 treatments are required to achieve optimal results.
DO I HAVE SPIDER VEINS OR VARICOSE VEINS?
Although they are often thought to be the same and can cause similar symptoms, varicose veins and spider veins differ in root and appearance. While spider veins appear on the skin surface, varicose are large, twisted veins that form below the skin surface. Spider veins commonly are more of a cosmetic problem and, unless you scratch or injure them, they shouldn't look too troublesome. Only after carefully assessing the type of vein you have, can the doctor determine what treatment is needed.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR LASER VEIN TREATMENT?
- Refrain from tanning and self-tanning creams for a week or two before treatment. A fresh tan can interfere a bit with the effectiveness of the CoolGlide Laser treatment, though this is less of a problem than with older, short wavelength lasers.
- Avoid wearing makeup on the areas to be treated. Makeup absorbs laser energy, and less energy will reach your unwanted blood vessels. Blistering may also occur.
- It is important to shave the areas to be treated the day before treatment or on the morning of treatment. Excess hair above the surface of the skin absorbs and wastes laser energy, and reduces the amount of energy that reaches the unwanted blood vessels where it is really needed. Excess hair above the surface of the skin also increases the chance of burning or irritating the skin.
- Some patients find it helpful to take 2-3 Advil, (200mg. tablets), 2 hours before coming in for treatment.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LASER VEIN TREATMENT?
Laser therapy works better for patients who have common bluish, purplish, or reddish spider veins, or reticular veins. Those greenish or bluish veins that form deeper in the skin but are still visible near the skin surface. Also, if your veins are genetic or cause an aesthetic problem like venous lakes or rosacea, you may benefit greatly from laser spider vein treatments. On the other hand, if you are pregnant, diabetic, take a blood thinner, use acne medicine, have blood clots, or you have a tattoo on the area, Laser therapy is not the best treatment choice for you.
IS IT PAINFUL TO GET LASER VEIN REMOVAL?
As with all treatments, it depends on each patient’s pain tolerance and sensitivity around the area being treated. At StudioMD, we use the Nd YAG laser technology, which has an additional cooling device designed to decrease discomfort during treatment. But take comfort in knowing that most people find laser vein removal a very tolerable experience.
