DOES SCLEROTHERAPY WORK FOR SPIDER VEIN REMOVAL?
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a safe and effective solution into the spider veins with a very small, thin needle. This solution will inflame the lining of the spider veins and force the vein to shut off. Your body will respond to this process by reabsorbing the spider veins. It is a painless treatment that usually takes around 4 to 6 weeks to be completed. But you should be aware that Sclerotherapy will only treat those veins that are currently visible. It won’t treat those permanently alter the venous system or prevent new veins from surfacing in the future. Before you decide to have Sclerotherapy, discuss your expectations with your doctor and have him/her carefully assess the current condition of your spider veins.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR SCLEROTHERAPY?
Sclerotherapy is suitable for all healthy patients who have unsightly veins on their legs, especially adult women in early to late middle age. Since it is a nonsurgical treatment, it is easy to perform and allows you to return home afterward and there is no downtime.
You should consider Sclerotherapy if you experience:
- Veins that traverse the leg
- Spider veins on one leg and not the other
- Spider veins on both legs
- Red or blue veins
- Web-like veins
- Single veins that run along your calf
- Spider veins on your ankles
HOW IS THE AFTERCARE?
Following your Sclerotherapy procedure, it’s advisable that you wear compression garments to help speed up the healing process. We also encourage patients to walk 20-30 minutes daily. Additional treatment sessions may be scheduled about 3 weeks apart.
CAN SCLEROTHERAPY TREAT LARGE VARICOSE VEINS?
Sclerotherapy uses injections of sclerosant to treat both varicose veins or spider veins. But the treatment approach of varicose veins is a little different. It requires a special technique known as ‘ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy‘. A procedure that uses a foamed sclerosant that somewhat resembles shaving cream, and re-liquifies after a few minutes. When the foam is injected into a vein, it displaces the blood and stays inside the lining of the vessel longer than liquid sclerosant. It has been shown to be a safe and effective method of treating varicose veins leading to long term freedom from troublesome veins.
