FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW IS THE EARLOBE REPAIR PROCEDURE?
Earlobe repair is one of the most direct and simple in-office procedures available. Even if both ears are being repaired it only takes less than an hour to perform the surgery. When dealing with torn and split earlobes, or earlobes that have been significantly stretched, the surgeon is required not only to rearrange the soft tissue but also to replace the tissue that has been damaged. Alternately, with patients that have experienced only a partial tear, the surgeon will remove the damaged skin and suture the lobe back together with small stitches. After the surgery is complete you can expect your unspoiled, natural-looking earlobes back.
HOW IS THE PREPARATION FOR AN EARLOBE RECONSTRUCTION?
It is such a quick procedure that it can even get done on the same day as your consultation. Well, as long as you inform this intention to the staff and have followed the preparation instructions before coming in. Because patients are encouraged to hold back on products containing aspirin for at least a week before the surgery. You should also avoid smoking and drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours before the procedure, as these habits can complicate the healing process. And since earlobe repair is an outpatient surgery that only requires local anesthesia, patients are allowed to drive back home alone.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR EARLOBE REPAIR?
Earlobe repair is a suitable procedure for any person who experiences torn, stretched, or injured earlobes, or that has sustained an injury from large, heavy jewelry in the past. It can also benefit those who have naturally large earlobes or whose earlobes have enlarged with age. Earlobes that have overly prominent scars such as keloids can also be treated with this surgery.
IS EARLOBE REPAIR SURGERY A PAINFUL PROCEDURE?
Earlobe repair is performed under a local anesthetic, so you will still be awake but unable to feel any pain. After the procedure is very likely that you won’t need pain medication, since most patients only experience mild discomfort in the aftercare.
HOW IS THE AFTERCARE OF EARLOBE REPAIR?
Because the procedure is so simple, most patients don’t experience much discomfort or even require pain medication after it is performed. You can expect some aching or throbbing feeling where the surgery was done, but this is usually gone within a day. Your doctor will probably prescribe an antibiotic ointment to be applied on your earlobes and the stitches will be removed within one week following the procedure. During this time you should also avoid using a blow dryer, so the heat doesn’t burn your ears and disrupts the healing process.
WHEN WILL I BE ABLE TO WEAR EARRINGS AGAIN?
The recovery process after the repair is as unique as the patients are. But most patients should be able to wear earrings again in the future. Although we advise you to wait for six months for the ears to fully heal before re-piercing your ears. It is always wise to check with your surgeon before doing so.
