FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN SAXENDA HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?
Saxenda is a part of a class of drugs referred to as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists. GLP-1 is a gastrointestinal hormone that aids in controlling sugar metabolism and hunger. Saxenda and other GLP-1 agonists mimic the results of this hormone. Saxenda is given as a straightforward injection once every day, which you are required to administer yourself. By delaying stomach emptying after meals, the injection encourages weight loss. This means that food stays in your stomach for a longer duration, resulting in a sense of fullness. According to studies, Saxenda can help you successfully lose weight. However, keep in mind that it functions best when coupled with a low-calorie diet and exercise.
WHAT DOSE OF SAXENDA IS SUGGESTED FOR ME?
Because every patient is unique, so are their treatment plans. Most treatments, however, begin with 0.6mg of Saxenda per day and gradually raise the dose weekly in 0.6mg increments until the maximal maintenance dose of 3mg is reached. It takes around 5 weeks to achieve the maximum dose, and the dosage should not be increased faster than this.
Don't raise your dosage if you suffer any side effects; wait until they go away before doing so. To accommodate this, additional needles might be offered. Please call your doctor if you accidentally inject more Saxenda than is advised. You might feel queasy or sick, and you'll need medical help.
HOW SHOULD I CONDUCT MY NEEDLE HANDLING AND DISPOSAL?
Remove the needle from the pen carefully once you've finished injecting. Reinstall the needle cap on the needle to prevent needlesticks. Place the needle immediately in a sharps container to prevent the risk of injury. Replace the pen cap after each use to protect Saxenda from light. Never throw away discarded needles in the garbage or recycle.
WILL THE INJECTIONS MAKE ME FEEL NAUSEOUS?
The most common side effect while starting Saxenda® is nausea, which normally goes away as the body adjusts to the medication. Try ingesting bland, low-fat items such as crackers, bread, and rice if you begin to feel queasy. Alternately, eat foods with a lot of water, such as soups and gelatin. It's also recommended that you refrain from lying down after they've eaten. Go outside for some fresh air as soon as you start to feel nauseated. Remember to follow the dose schedule, which is intended to limit the incidence of gastrointestinal issues.
HOW SOON AFTER PREGNANCY DO I GET TO START SAXENDA?
We recommend waiting at least 3 months after giving birth or having a c-section before starting Saxenda, because the body is already undergoing many physical and psychological changes at this time. To get the most out of Saxenda, begin therapy when your body weight is more stable and you have time to implement the lifestyle adjustments that will help you lose weight and keep it off in the long run.
ARE SAXENDA® INJECTIONS FDA APPROVED?
Yes! Rest assured that axenda (liraglutide) has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for chronic weight control in patients aged 12 and up who are obese, as defined by specified BMI cut-offs for age and sex that correspond to a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater for adults, and who weigh more than 60 kg (132 pounds).
