FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
RED LIGHT THERAPY FOR HAIR LOSS: HOW DOES IT WORK?
Red light therapy for hair loss is a non-invasive method that works by penetrating the layers of the scalp skin with low levels of red or near-infrared light. This technique boosts cellular energy and expands follicles, creating an ideal environment for hair growth and strengthening.
Overall, Red Light Therapy stimulates our cells to produce and deliver healing and rejuvenation energy to the areas that require it. When used for hair treatments, red light therapy can improve local blood flow, lessen inflammation, and deliver nutrients to your scalp follicles, leading to thicker, stronger, and longer hair.
WHAT EXACTLY IS LED LIGHT TECHNOLOGY?
The goal of the Diode Laser Hair Regrowth therapy is to affect the biochemical functions of your scalp. It can trigger the body's natural responses to expedite healing and cellular regeneration for hair growth using precise wavelengths of light.
Specific wavelengths of the LED red light laser can release your body's stored nitric oxide. And as a result, it awakens dormant hair follicles, boosts local blood flow, and decreases inflammation.
WHAT IS THE FREQUENCY OF RED LIGHT THERAPY?
All average wavelengths of red light can permeate the skin, boost collagen formation and tissue repair. Near-infrared wavelengths, on the other hand, can penetrate deeper and target joints and muscles. So, depending on the therapy, the frequency used in most red light devices spans from 650 nm (deep red) to 850 nm (near-infrared). At StudioMD's we typically use the Diode Laser at a 650nm and 625nm frequency to stimulate blood flow and transport oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles. And the 808nm laser frequency to prevent additional hair loss development.
HOW LONG DOES A RED LIGHT THERAPY SESSION LAST?
The recommended regimen is for 8 to 10 sessions over two to three weeks, followed by a maintenance session every one to two months, though this can vary depending on the patient. Depending on the size and complexity of the treated area, each session might last anywhere from five to thirty minutes. Remember that results build up over time, and that after 8 to 10 sessions, results will typically become more evident.
WHO SHOULD NOT HAVE RED LIGHT THERAPY?
Red light therapy is not appropriate for patients who have received light-sensitive therapies within the last six months. Patients with epilepsy or other serious autoimmune skin conditions are also not eligible for the treatment.
Finally, Red Light Therapy is expressly forbidden for patients with pacemakers and pregnant women.
