What Is Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment?

Sclerotherapy is an injectable procedure that treats unwanted leg veins using a special solution called a sclerosing agent. When the solution is injected with an extremely fine needle, it irritates the vessel lining and causes the walls to seal together. Once closed, the vein becomes nonfunctional and is gradually absorbed by the body.

The procedure typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. Discomfort is minimal. Patients can return to normal activity right away, making it a practical choice for busy schedules. Results develop gradually as the treated vein fades over several weeks.

Planning Your Treatment at StudioMD

Your visit begins with an evaluation of your leg veins, symptom history, and treatment goals. The provider reviews your medications, circulation patterns, and any previous vein procedures. This step ensures safe and effective treatment tailored to your vessel type.

How the Injection Process Works

A fine needle delivers a small amount of sclerosing solution directly into the targeted vein. The solution irritates the vessel lining, which causes the walls to collapse and seal. Once blood flow stops, the vein is slowly absorbed. Most injections take only seconds.

What Happens During the Visit

You will lie comfortably while the provider identifies the veins to be treated. The injections are quick, and most patients describe a mild pinch or tingling. Treatments rarely require numbing. Walking immediately afterward is encouraged to support circulation and reduce pressure within superficial vessels.

Aftercare and Treatment Progression

Depending on your vein pattern, you may be asked to wear compression stockings for a short period. Mild redness or slight swelling is common and typically resolves quickly. Follow-up sessions are spaced several weeks apart until the treated veins have fully faded.

I recently went into StudioMD to have a procedure done by Dr. Khan. Specifically, I wanted to treat excess fat in my abdominal area and decided to opt for smart lipo. Dr. Khan is very sure of himself as a doctor, which put a lot of my woes to the side. This was my first large cosmetic surgery, so I was extremely nervous. On the day of my procedure, I was delayed because some events were happening in the city, and Dr. Khan and his nurses were extremely accommodating. They let me take my time (I had to pee and just couldn't because of nerves until 2 minutes before surgery) and even gave me pep talks and stress balls to calm my nerves. When we got to work, it was quick and effortless. Dr. Khan allowed me to ask as many questions as I wanted and even called the next day to see how I was doing. They prescribed meds that were ready for pickup immediately and even gave me additional meds that I asked for pain management just in case. One of the amazing nurse technicians even text me afterward and shared her favorite shapewear and other things to help with recovery. I know many of these things seem like, "yeah, they should do that", but I've seen a lot of practices that don't. I also felt the price was fairly affordable since I've seen similar pricing outside of NYC. I'm beginning to feel beautiful in my body again, and I am so thankful to Dr. Khan and his staff. I'll be back soon for some other small cosmetic procedures I want to keep up.

I also saw that they had super cool machines so next time i definitely want to try one of their lasers! Every time I've come in to to receive a service, I was greeted with enthusiasm and seen right away! The best part of it all is, after only a few laser treatments, I can see the results! My bikini is bare, my face is smooth. In addition to laser, I've had microdermabrasion-SUCCESSFUL, chemical peel-successful! Everything Jamie recommends is perfect for me and as a medium tanner skin woman, it's not always easy to find estheticians who are knowledgeable on pigmented skin. To my surprise, the laser treatments were practically painless! I didn't feel a thing in my bikini area. They keep their tools and machines up to date! Very important!! My aesthetician Jamie knows what she's doing. I wish I could carry her around in my pocket, but you'll need her-I'll bet! Cheers to a great staff, knowledgeable staff of people who get it. I have been seeing StudioMD since December 2022 for my hair FUE transplantation. Everyone and everything has been consistent and professional. The transplant team did a good job was friendly, and cognizant of any issues I may have. The nursing staff answered all of my questions and was always available to me for any level of questions (medical, financial, etc). As I continue to follow up with them both in-person and virtually, I continue to experience the same level of professionalism and commitment from the day I met the team and had my procedure done. If you are on the fence about getting any sort of FUE or any cosmetic procedure done, I would rest easy knowing that StudioMD is out there taking care of their patients and treating them really well. An aside for finances. Most cosmetic surgeries/treatments are not covered by insurance because insurance is stupid. Prices for certain procedures can get hefty but the team doesn't strong arm you into something that will financially burden you and can help you plan for the financial strings that will come attached to the procedures. If you do not have a line of credit that can cover part if not all of the costs, the team offers you CareCredit which is an independent lender that reviews your financial profile to help approve a loan for you with a decent interest rate. It is interest free for about 6 months so plan accordingly about how to pay it back.

Mild tenderness, small raised areas, or light bruising may appear and typically resolve within days. Some veins may temporarily appear darker due to trapped blood before they fade. Your provider may schedule a brief follow-up to assess this and ensure optimal healing. Allergic reactions to the sclerosing agent are extremely rare, and your provider will discuss all potential side effects before treatment.

Your Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment Results

Veins fade gradually over two to twelve weeks, depending on size and location. Once fully absorbed, treated veins should not return.
