FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FUE AND FUT IN COMPARISON TO OTHER HAIR TRANSPLANTS?
Traditional hair transplants can often look very unnatural, because with older techniques hairs were planted in with about 15-20 hairs per plug. This created the visible dotted appearance that often stood out who had the procedure done. Nowadays, with FUE and FUT technology, grafts are much smaller, between 1 to 3 hairs and look very natural. Hairline design got a lot more refined too, making it almost impossible to detect a modern transplant.
Both FUT and FUE are known to deliver great results with a natural looking after effect. But the approach of each technique differs significantly. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) usually involves making a long incision across the back of your head to remove a piece of your scalp, which contains hair grafts. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), on the other hand, is less invasive and entails donor grafts being removed directly from its original location with a special punch tool. So you don’t have to worry about scarring at the back of your head.
WHAT IS THE PATIENT CRITERIA FOR FUE AND FUT HAIR TRANSPLANT?
It is the responsibility of your doctor to evaluate your hair loss pattern and lay out the appropriate treatment plan to suit your budget and lifestyle. Key factors that will determine if you are suitable for a hair transplant usually involve:
• Your degree of hair loss;
• The amount of grafts required to allow the desired result;
• Quality, density and texture of hair in the donor area;
• Past procedures and results achieved so far;
• Potential for future hair loss.
HOW MANY GRAFTS WILL I NEED IN A HAIR TRANSPLANT?
It can vary substantially per patient, depending on your degree of hair loss and the quality, density and texture of hair in the donor area. Overall, the number of grafts required for an average hair restoration stays around 2000 - 4000. But some patients may need up-to 8000 grafts or more.
HOW IS THE RECOVERY AFTER A FUE/FUT HAIR TRANSPLANT?
Most patients are able to return to their previous routine within two weeks after the procedure. Keep in mind that recovery time after an FUE hair transplant is usually much faster than FUT because there is no incision involved. You can experience the area around the newly implanted grafts to feel tender and appear slightly raised at first, but this should subside within a week. Some patients can show scabbing, but it shouldn't take more than 2 weeks to flake away completely.
If necessary, patients can wear clean and soft headgear to cover up the treated scalp during the healing phase, but only after the first 3 days.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO SEE THE RESULTS?
The new transplanted hair will begin to grow 4 months after the procedure and you can expect a large growth spurt between 4-6 months. At the 6 months mark post-treatment about 60% of hair will be visible and growing. But it will take from 9 to 12 months for full growth, depending on your hair length. During this time, your hair may seem to be growing randomly and at different lengths, but this is natural and expected. At 14 months you should be able to see the full effect of your hair transplant.
