WHAT EXACTLY IS A GUMMY SMILE?

When the upper lip lifts excessively above the teeth, exposing the upper gums, it creates what is sometimes referred to as a "gummy smile," which can be considered unattractive. This can be caused by a variety of factors, but the most common is when the muscle that elevates the upper lip becomes overactive. By lessening the muscles' strong pull on the upper lip, Botox can safely assist in cases like this to correct the upper gum overexposure. Sometimes having a thin upper lip can exacerbate the effects of a gummy smile by making the upper gum even more visible.

HOW CAN BOTOX HELP TO FIX A GUMMY SMILE?

A gummy smile can be treated quickly and easily with a non-invasive Botox injection. When botulinum toxin type A is injected into the upper gum, it relaxes the upper lip muscles and limits the rise of the upper lip when smiling. With just a few units injected between the nose and upper lip, Botox can fix the look of a “gummy” smile and create a more appealing and natural smile.

WILL I BE ABLE TO LAUGH AND SMILE AFTERWARDS?

Yes, definitely! BOTOX® therapies will not drastically alter your facial appearance or make you appear to have "work done. The muscle activity that causes gum exposure or upper lip wrinkles is only partially reduced, so you’ll still be able to laugh or smile, but without creases or showing too much upper gum when you do it.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL RISKS?

All Botulinum Toxin procedures have the potential to weaken nearby small facial muscles, though this is extremely unlikely. This can result in temporary asymmetry, where the effect is stronger on one side but not the other. However, a touch-up treatment at the 2-3 week check-up appointment can correct this undesirable outcome.

FOR HOW LONG ARE THE RESULTS EFFECTIVE?

Botox injections in the upper gum area can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, depending on the patient's reaction to botulinum toxin type A. Botox is considered a progressive solution for Gummy Smile Correction. Meaning that after a few treatments, the treatment often lasts longer because the size and strength of the treated overactive muscles begin to decrease. Along with the ability to break the habit of overusing these muscles, which will help them become less hyperactive.
