FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DOES BOTOX FOR MIGRAINES WORK?
BOTOX® is the only brand of botulinum toxin proven helpful in any form of migraine or headache. That’s because Botox can successfully block the small nerves that carry pain from the head to the brain, reducing the amount of chemicals released from the nerve endings. So not only does it decrease stress on the nervous system, but it also prevents migraines from developing in the first place. And even if any headaches do occur from this point on, they will certainly be less severe.
IS BOTOX FOR MIGRAINES PAINFUL?
The procedure requires a very small and very sharp needle to perform the injections, which makes it not especially painful. Most patients are able to return to their daily activities immediately after the treatment. You can expect to feel a brief burning sensation at the injection site, but an experienced injector won’t take more than 10-15 minutes to perform the procedure. So the entire process is typically well tolerated.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED IT?
Overall, BOTOX for migraine treatments take around 10 minutes per session and are required every 3 months. Your treatment plan will likely start with 2 treatments, 12 weeks apart, to determine how well BOTOX is working for you. After that, you and your doctor will discuss and adjust the treatment, based on your individual progress.
HOW MUCH DOES BOTOX FOR MIGRAINE COST?
The total cost of Botox-A therapy can vary significantly depending on location, medical practice and how many units your individual treatment plan requires. Overall, Botox is relatively expensive, so the added cost of it plus procedure can exceed $3000. As a reference, at StudioMD, you can expect to pay $495 for up to 40 units, and $12 per unit after that. Keep in mind that some insurance carriers (including Medicare and Medicaid) can “cover” the treatment, and you will be liable only for a co-pay. But you will be required to have a precertification for that.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Although uncommon, Botox does have possible side effects. In clinical trials, the most common side effect was neck pain, experienced by 9% of every person taking BOTOX®. Other less frequent side effects included headache, migraine, slight or partial facial paralysis, drooping eyelids, bronchitis, musculoskeletal stiffness, muscular weakness, muscle pain, musculoskeletal pain, muscle spasms, injection site pain, and high blood pressure.
