FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS IPL FOR FRECKLE TREATMENT?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a photorejuvenation procedure used to treat skin discoloration, damaged blood vessels, stretch marks, freckles and scars. It is more frequently used on the face, neck, shoulders, back and hands. IPL technology allows light to penetrate the skin in a range of wavelengths that targets red and brown spots resulting in a more youthful and even skin tone. With that, IPL can brighten the skin and diminish the appearance of sun damage, age spots and rosacea.
HOW DOES THE IPL WORK?
IPL technology was designed to target cells with excess pigment, causing the pigment to rise to the surface of the skin where it sloughs off. Since the excess pigment can be stored at different levels of skin, the treatment can take up to 6 sessions to reach the deeper layers and obtain optimal results. Even though IPL is known to be a facial procedure, it can be used to treat all areas of the body.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS OF THE IPL TREATMENTS LAST?
With adequate skin care and sun protection following the IPL treatment, your results can last for years. But it's critical for you to keep up with the recommended skin care regimen, regularly and year around. To maintain your IPL results, you must protect your skin every season with products specifically designed to suppress the development of further brown and red discoloration. With proper aftercare, you’ll likely only need a single maintenance IPL treatment per year.
HOW IS THE AFTERCARE OF IPL THERAPY?
IPL Photofacial requires no social downtime, but there are several aftercare recommendations that you should follow to ensure optimal results. They include:

• No hot showers for 48 hours.
• Avoid taking aspirin, Ibuprofen, consuming alcohol for 2 days after treatment.
• Avoid heavy exertion and activities which may cause flushing for 1 week after treatment.
• Avoid harsh topical products such as retinoids and glycolic acid products for 10 days after treatment.
• No swimming, especially in pools with chemicals such as chlorine, for 15 days after treatment.
• No electrolysis, facial waxing or depilatories (hair removal products) for 20 days after treatment.
• Avoid direct sunlight on the treated area and use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater for 4 to 6 weeks after treatment.
• Do not pick at or remove any loosening or peeling skin.
HOW MUCH DOES IPL TREATMENT COST?
Every patient is different, so are their skin condition and desired outcomes. IPL prices are usually determined by the size of the treated area and the number of procedures required to achieve optimal results. At StudioMD, prices range around $250 per treatment or $600 for 3 treatments combined. Come in for a complimentary consultation so we can set up a IPL treatment plan that works for your goals and your budget.
CAN ANYONE RECEIVE AN IPL TREATMENT?
Unfortunately, current IPL technology only works on patients with level 1 or 2 skin type, such as Caucasian men and women. Because when there is little contrast between your skin and hair colour, the melanin-rich skin cells can also absorb the pulsed light energy and become very hot. This can cause pain, blisters, and even burns. So the treatment is not safe for those with darker skin tones.
