WHAT IS KYBELLA?
KYBELLA® is an injectable medication used to improve the appearance of moderate to severe submental fat below the chin, also known as “double chin.” Kybella is made of a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid and has been FDA approved since 2015. When injected into the submental region, the deoxycholic acid disrupts the cell membrane of the localized fat cells, so they can be easily removed through your natural metabolic process.
HOW CAN KYBELLA HELP MY DOUBLE CHIN?
As mentioned before, the active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. It is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into your double chin, deoxycholic acid begins to destroy fat cells up to the point that your chin will no longer store or accumulate fat. The final result is a noticeable reduction in the fullness of your chin, revealing a better contoured facial profile.
WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE FOR KYBELLA INJECTIONS?
Most patients tolerate the injections very well and there’s only minimal downtime associated with Kybella procedures. With injections in general, there is always some risk of swelling and tenderness in the injection site, which can be aggravated depending on the amount of subcutaneous fat that was treated. But you can expect the swelling to be resolved within 7-10 days. Although rare, other side effects can include bruising and temporary numbness.

Recent studies have shown that the treatment resulted in high patient satisfaction, with nearly 80% patients reporting satisfaction with their appearance, both face and chin, after Kybella procedures. Common side effects can include pain, swelling, bruising, redness, and numbness in the injection site. Since it is a non surgical procedure, the recovery process associated with Kybella is minimal in most cases. Minor side effects typically subside within two weeks. Although extremely rare, more serious side effects have been reported, including facial muscle weakness, uneven smile, trouble swallowing, or nerve injury in the jaw.
