FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment that helps diminish varicose veins and spider veins. The procedure involves injecting chemicals - also known as sclerosing agents - into trouble areas with damaged veins. The sclerosing agents pressure the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and the blood to clot. The vessel will then turn into scar tissue that fades away from view. Sclerotherapy can also reduce the pain caused by damaged veins. It is known to be a very safe and far less invasive alternative to vascular surgery.
WHICH AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH SCLEROTHERAPY?
More frequently, Sclerotherapy is used to treat varicose and spider veins in areas such as:
• thighs;
• calves;
• ankles;
• feet;
• face (mainly the sides of the nose).

It is important to note that the number of veins injected in one session depends on the size and location of the veins, as well as the general medical condition of the patient.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
The length of a Sclerotherapy treatment to clear or improve the condition can vary greatly from patient to patient. Usually, it takes around 4 sessions, but up to 6 or more sessions may be necessary where veins are more numerous and extensive. Before starting your treatment it is important to have an ultrasound mapping of your veins, from which the doctor will be able to give you a better estimate of the number of treatments you may need.
IS IT PAINFUL TO GET A SCLEROTHERAPY?
Topical numbing cream can be applied 30 minutes before at the patient’s request, but the procedure is typically performed without any anesthetic. You can expect to feel a mild stinging sensation with the injections, but most people find the procedure fairly comfortable. Some patients may experience moderate to severe pain and some bruising around the site of the injection. But these symptoms tend to be temporary, lasting 1 to 7 days, at the very most.
HOW EFFICIENT IS THE TREATMENT?
Sclerotherapy has a very high success rate of 96% in all cases. But results depend greatly on the skills of the injector, the quality and concentration of the solution used, the severity of the condition found and your commitment with the aftercare following the procedure.
HOW IS THE AFTERCARE?
For the best results of your Sclerotherapy it is recommended for you to walk immediately after the injections. You’ll be allowed to use acetaminophen pain medicine if experiencing any discomfort. But you should refrain from anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and ibuprofen, as they can affect your blood’s clotting process. For the same reason, any form of heat must be limited for 24 hours after the treatment, including saunas or hot baths. You will be required to wear compression stockings for 72 hours after the injections and then during the day for 2 weeks. For 7-10 days you should also stay away from high impact physical activities, like jogging and swimming. Finally, avoid excessive sun exposure for 2-4 weeks after treatment and wear SPF 30 or greater sunscreen at all times.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GET VEIN REMOVAL?
The cost of a Sclerotherapy treatment can vary significantly depending on the severity, size and location of the veins, as well as the general medical condition of the patient. StudioMD offers complimentary consultations to assess your individual issues and set up a plan that suits both your goals and budget. Overall, Sclerotherapy injections cost around $350 per treated area.
