WHAT IS THE PRFM TREATMENT FOR HAIR LOSS?
Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) is a fantastic non-surgical treatment designed to prevent hair loss and hair thinning in both male and female patients. The PRFM process involves taking a small blood sample from the patient and processing it to strain the plasma, which contains tiny blood cells called platelets, vital for cell growth and repair. This dense plasma containing a high concentration of growth factors is then carefully injected back into the scalp to help repair, vascularise and strengthen the hair follicles.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PRFM PROCEDURE?
As the procedure begins, the blood will be drawn from your arm and put into a centrifuge to concentrate the blood cells. It will take around 8 to 10 minutes in the centrifuge to split your blood into three layers: red blood cells, platelet-poor plasma, platelet fibrin matrix. The platelet fibrin matrix will be drawn up into a syringe and then injected into the problem areas of your scalp that need increased hair growth. Finally, you’ll sit under a Dermalux Red LED lamp for around 15-30 minutes, to help calm the skin and let the injected plasma settle.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS OR POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF PRFM FOR HAIR LOSS?
Take comfort in knowing that PRFM for hair loss is a very safe treatment with no risk of infectious disease transmission. PRFM is, afterall, an autologous product that utilizes your own blood in a closed circuit preparation. So adverse reactions are rare. You may experience slight redness and swelling following the procedure, or even a mild pain at the injection site. But these symptoms are expected and should dissipate within the first 24h.
HOW IS THE RECOVERY FROM A PRFM TREATMENT?
A PRFM procedure takes about 30 minutes and most patients usually engage in a course of three treatments, 2-4 weeks apart. Overall, you can expect to see some improvement from 3-6 months and full effect results from 6-12 months. However, keep in mind that top-up treatments will be required to maintain results and sustain thicker, fuller hair. Following your procedure you can immediately return to your normal daily routine. Although it is best to avoid any strenuous activity and drinking alcohol for 24 hours post op. You can expect to experience a little shedding of hair within the first couple months, but this is normal and expected.
DOES PRFM TREATMENT HURT?
You can expect to experience a mild stinging sensation with each PRFM injection. But your discomfort during the PRFM treatment will depend on your own pain tolerance and sensitiveness level to injections. Since each patient responds differently to pain, we always offer local anaesthetic options to help reduce any discomfort. We encourage you to discuss any concerns during your initial consultation, so your doctor can assess all the numbing options available and ensure you'll have the best experience possible during your PRFM treatment.
