HOW DOES LASER TATTOO REMOVAL WORK?

With Q-Switch and Picosecond technology, when the tattoo pigment in your skin is hit by the laser light it shatters into far smaller particles. Particles which your white blood cells can break down a lot faster and carry out through the lymph nodes to eliminate from your body.

The timeline of treatment and the speed in which ink particles can be filtered out, varies with each patient's immune system. It is also dependent on several factors including where the tattoo is located on the body and how well the body’s lymphatic system will respond to it.

DOES LASER TATTOO REMOVAL CAUSE A SCAR?

Recent laser methods, like the Q-switched Nd, employ the latest state of the art tattoo removal technology and fracture the ink into tiny particles so that your body’s own immune system can eliminate it. So there's no skin trauma or scarring like it used to be with older style CO2 lasers.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REMOVE A TATTOO?

During your free consultation at StudioMD, our laser specialists will assess your tattoo and provide you with an estimated treatment timeline. The total number of sessions will depend on the location of the tattoo, the amount of ink on it and how deep the tattoo is in the skin. Overall, most tattoos usually require between 6 to ten 10 sessions to be completely removed. For multi-coloured tattoos with unique inks, colours and frosting techniques the removal can take from 10 to 14 sessions. But keep in mind that some tattoos only show results after the second or third session.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

There can be quite a few side effects with laser tattoo removal and they include:

• Whitening of the tattoo (blanching)

• Redness and slight swelling

• Itching

• Bruising

• Blistering

• Pinpoint bleeding

• Scabbing

CAN I GET A NEW TATTOO OVER THE LASER TREATED AREA?

Yes, you can! If you wish to have a new tattoo or a cover-up, we can work along your tattooist to remove or fade only the areas required to get the best result for your new inked art. Although it is advisable that you wait a minimum of 6-12 months before your first removal session. In order to prevent any adverse side effects of the laser treatment - such as scarring, post inflammatory pigmentation or even allergic reactions - that may affect the healing process of your new tattoo.
