FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS FUE HAIR TRANSPLANT?
Follicular Unit Extraction hair transplantation or FUE, is the most advanced and sophisticated hair transplant surgery currently available. It involves the removal of individual hair follicles from the back of your scalp and the artful transplant of them into desired areas. During the procedure, the donor hair follicles are screened under stereo-microscope to check their integrity and only then transferred into hair thinning sites or balding areas on the head. A FUE transplant, unlike other surgical methods, allows the individual extraction of the donor-hair leaving hardly any visible scarring.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FUT AND FUE HAIR TRANSPLANTS?
The main difference between FUE and FUT methods is the way in which the hair is extracted from the donor site. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedures demand harvesting a strip of scalp under a microscope to then divide it into grafts containing 1 or 2 hairs. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) utilises a small punch tool that already removes grafts with 1 or 2 hairs throughout a much larger donor area. After the extraction phase, both procedures insert the hair with tiny incisions, and carry on the transplant in a very similar way. Many patients report that the incision sites in FUE procedures are somewhat smaller and less noticeable than that of FUT procedures.
ARE HAIR TRANSPLANTS LONG LASTING?
For long lasting or even permanent results, the hair extracted in the donor site must be genetically strong and unlikely to fall out. Both FUE and FUT transplants only collect healthy hair follicles, to ensure that when moved they will continue to regrow as normal. Overall results show that over 90% of transplant hair becomes permanent after 10 months with FUE procedures.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HEAL?
Results may vary according to each patient's own healing process, skin type and hair texture. Overall, FUE procedures take around 2 weeks to give a similar appearance to that prior to the procedure. With FUT procedures, recovery takes a little longer, around 5 weeks to heal. Both techniques use dissolvable stitching and allow the patient to return to work or resume an exercise routine within 4-5 days. Keep in mind that the most intense postoperative period of FUE and FUT techniques are the first 15 days, when the area is redder and you may experience itching and inflammation.
AM I A SUITABLE CANDIDATE FOR A HAIR TRANSPLANT?
Unfortunately, not everybody is suitable for a hair transplant. There are many factors that must be taken into consideration to determine if you’ll benefit from it, such as the extent of hair loss or thinning and the amount of hair you wish to regain.
