FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM LIFESTYLE COUNSELING FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
During your first appointment for lifestyle counseling the doctor will ask you for a summary of the problems or questions that have brought you to lifestyle counseling in order to work with you to establish weight loss goals and requirements. An initial, personalized treatment plan will be worked out together with you. But it can later be modified when both you and your counselor have a better grasp of the range and depth of your health needs and wellness journey. While some people only need a couple sessions to carry on with their counseling plan, others may require more time due to the number and complexity of their concerns.
WHAT IS OBESITY?
In short, obesity is defined as having excess body fat. A simple way of finding out whether you carry excess weight is by using body mass index (BMI). It is a general guide that compares weight and height to give a score that can be used to determine how healthy your weight is.
- below 18.5 is underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9 is a healthy weight
- 25-29.9 is overweight
- above 30 is obese
While useful as general information, the BMI does not account for build and weight content, eg. people who are tall, short, or muscular. So it is very important to consult with a health specialist to better determine your body fat percentage as it can be a more accurate indicator of when it may be time to consider attempting to lose weight. Those with body fat percentages over 25% are generally considered overweight and over 30% obese.
WHAT TYPES OF PATIENTS DO YOU SEE?
Overall, Lifestyle Counseling is intended for those seeking weight loss and ongoing weight management. Patients with chronic diseases such as high cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes. From people who need to lose weight to qualify for a procedure and those who want to maintain results after a procedure, such as liposuction or plastic surgery. Lifestyle counseling is also intended for pregnant women or breastfeeding moms who want to keep their weight under control but have specific health demands during this stage in life.
ARE THE SERVICES CONFIDENTIAL?
Yes. What you say during your Lifestyle Counseling is kept totally confidential and will not be discussed with anyone without your prior consent. This means that confidentiality not only applies to things you might tell your doctor, but it also covers any conclusions, theories, or opinions that your doctor might form in connection with your medical treatment.
