CAN LASER TREATMENT COMPLETELY REMOVE A TATTOO?

Since every person’s immune system is different and each tattoo is different, several factors affect the number of treatments required for a tattoo removal and the final results that can be expected with it. Factors like your skin type, tattoo location, colours and pigments used and the amount of ink, can both positively and negatively impact your chances of having your tattoo completely removed.

Tattoo removal is a process that takes time, dedication, and a clinic with a very good reputation. At StudioMD we’ll make sure that your body is given the best possible opportunity at completely removing the ink, leaving your skin bare again.

IS IT PAINFUL TO GET LASER TATTOO REMOVAL?

With laser tattoo removal you can expect to feel a sensation similar to flicking a hot rubber band repeatedly on the skin. It’s not pleasant, but nowhere near as much pain as one would expect. And, let’s face it, it only lasts for a few seconds.

At StudioMD, we use a high-powered cooling machine to provide better comfort during your treatment. But, if you are still worried about how much it’s going to hurt, we can always provide a numbing cream for you to apply pre-treatment.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

For most patients, some form of body response is an expected part of the tattoo removal process. The most common side effects are:

• Redness

• Tenderness

•Swelling

• Blistering

• Scabs

• Bruising

• Hyperpigmentation

• Hypopigmentation

Take comfort in knowing that all of these side effects are temporary. Redness, tenderness, and swelling typically disappear within two days after the treatment. Blisters will only appear on the first day and, although scabs, bruising, and blistering can take up to a week to heal, they’ll also subside completely after that.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

At StudioMD, your laser clinician will assess your tattoo and give you an estimate of the amount of sessions required for the complete or partial removal of it. The total number of sessions will depend on the location of the tattoo, the amount of ink it has and how deep the tattoo is in the skin.

Keep in mind that some tattoos only show results after the second or third session. Overall, most tattoos usually require between 6 to 10 sessions to be completely removed. As for multi-coloured tattoos with unique inks, colours and frosting techniques the removal can take from 10 to 14 sessions.

ARE THERE OTHER TECHNIQUES AVAILABLE FOR TATTOO REMOVAL?

StudioMD offers treatments with Q-Switched and Picosecond laser Systems, which are both approved by the FDA. Apart from that, there are only two other methods also certified for tattoo removal: Skin Grafting and Dermabrasion.

Despite being efficient at tattoo removal they offer far more side effects than laser methods. Skin Graft requires incisions and stitches and it tends to leave a noticeable scar in the process. Likewise, Dermabrasion is only effective if skin is sanded away along with the tattoo pigment, also leaving a noticeable scar and skin textural change.
