FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS SCALP MICROPIGMENTATION?
Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic procedure in which natural pigment is applied to the epidermal layer of the scalp with a needle to add density and replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles. Most commonly, Micropigmentation has been used to enhance the shape of eyebrows to improve definition. But the same process can be applied to the scalp of men and women who suffer from alopecia or hair loss. By camouflaging the surface area of the scalp where hair loss has already occurred, SMP creates the illusion of fuller hair and helps restore confidence and self-esteem in patients of all skin types.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE PROCEDURE?
A specially designed micropigmentation tattoo gun is used to deposit pigments in tiny spots within the upper layers of your scalp's skin during the SMP treatment. Each 'dot' represents a single shaved hair follicle. When hundreds of dots are placed and skillfully blended with whatever real hair you have left, the illusion of a full head of shaved hair is achieved. Three main aspects affect the success of that illusion: your technician's assessment and expertise, the materials and method chosen, and the treatment specification.
DOES MY HAIR HAVE TO BE SHORT DURING TREATMENT?
Both yes and no. If you've had the treatment to hide bald spots on your scalp, you'll likely need to keep your hair short to minimize the contrast between your natural hair and the treatment site. But if you have had the treatment in between your existing hair to create the illusion of greater thickness, that won't be necessary, because the recreated follicles are there only to act as a permanent concealer or thickening spray.
HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?
Most patients with androgenetic alopecia (standard pattern hair loss) require between 2 to 4 SMP treatment sessions. Additional treatments may be required for patients who have extensive scarring. It is important to understand that your new 'hair' won't look its best after only one session. Only after two sessions, when your treatment will either be full or near to completion, will you be able to experience the confidence boost associated with SMP results.
DOES IT HURT TO GET SMP?
Although everyone experiences pain in a very individual way, most of our clients find the SMP procedure quite tolerable and report getting used to the needling sensation after the first 20 minutes. In fact, clients who already have tattoos claim the minor discomfort is nothing compared to the pain they experience with their normal tattoos. Keep in mind that SMP uses microneedles with a diameter of around 0.2mm at the insertion depth to pierce the skin, so there is very little, if any, bleeding associated with it. You can expect some redness in the treatment site after the SMP session, but the side effect usually fades away over the next few hours.
