WHAT IS NAIL FUNGUS?
Your body naturally hosts a variety of microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. While some microorganisms can be useful to the body, others can multiply rapidly and cause infections, such as onychomycosis (or fungal nail). In more severe cases, the fungus can even infect a broken or injured nail or spread from a nearby skin infection, resulting in a condition called tinea (or athlete’s foot). Due to humidity and compression, onychomycosis is far more frequent in toenails than in the fingernails.
HOW DOES THE LASER TOENAIL TREATMENT WORK?
Laser Genesis Toenail treatments work by using a light wavelength that passes through the nail and the surrounding tissue. The laser light is then absorbed by the pigment present in the toenail fungus, causing it to heat up, eventually killing or damaging the fungal organism. Unlike many treatments, your toenail will not fall off as a result of this procedure. But you won’t be able to notice a clear nail immediately after, as it can take at least 3 months for your nail to clear out, and from 6 to 12 months for the entire nail to grow again.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Most patients will see their fungal nails clear with a single treatment, especially those who had fungal nails for less than a year. In more severe cases, in which the nails that have been infected by fungus for several months or years, the treatment can require up to 4 sessions or more. It is also important to keep in mind that it can take 9 to 12 months to see complete clearing of the fungal nail.
AM I SUITABLE FOR THE TREATMENT?
Unfortunately, not all nail conditions can be treated with Laser Genesis. The technology was designed to attack fungal organisms only, and not all yellow nails are fungus infections. Complications like nail trauma and other dermatological conditions can look like fungal infections, but will not respond to treatment. So it is crucial to have your yellow toenails assessed beforehand to determine if this treatment is appropriate for your particular condition.
IS LASER GENESIS FOR NAIL FUNGUS PAINFUL?
Most patients report no significant pain. You can expect to experience a warming sensation but the temperature does not get too high above normal body temperature. There is no need for anesthesia or numbing cream in laser toenail treatments. There are also no restrictions post procedure and your normal activities can be resumed immediately.
HOW MUCH DOES THE TREATMENT COST?
Nail and toenail fungus treatments are considered aesthetic procedures and therefore are not covered by insurance plans. The treatment is, however, quite affordable. The cost for a Nail Fungus Laser Genesis treatment is frequently LESS expensive than counterpart prescription medications. Costs range around $250 per toe, or $400 for all toes.
